Augusten Burroughs, remembering his childhood, relates a horrifying picture of his mother basically giving him away to her psychiatrist and his bizarre family. No child should have to endure the psychological torture that this young man underwent. However, through the author’s gift for story-telling, he shares his personal story in a way that presents it with humor and easy readability. Perhaps because of the journaling he did when he was young, he is able to present with great clarity his reactions to those situations that befell him. This book is well worth the read to show that, despite the adversity of his childhood, the author was able to achieve a degree of success as a young man through his chosen career of writing. ( ) This was a re-read. Upon recommending a friend give Burroughs's Dry a read I decided to give myself a mini-retrospective of his work. Running with Scissors is kind of a classic in the comic trauma memoir genre at this point, it would seem. It's still a great read, full of voice and vivid descriptions of settings and interior life. Forgot how brutal some of the content was. Now we know what would happen if a Jackie Collins novel mated with a Stephen King novel and the story was made into a National Lampoon movie. This is a bizarre story of two dysfunctional families that is very-well written and oddly funny. It's a testament to human resilience that the author didn't grow up to be a serial killer.
You will either love Running With Scissors or you will hate it. I loved it. OK, there are tedious passages, when you feel Burroughs is doing the writerly equivalent of adding extra stuffing to a perfectly comfortable beanbag. But it is impossible not to laugh at all the jokes; to admire the sardonic, fetid tone; to wonder, slack-jawed and agog, at the sheer looniness of the vista he conjures up. The book, which promotes visceral responses (of laughter, wincing, retching) on nearly every page, contains the kind of scenes that are often called harrowing but which are also plainly funny and rich with child's-eye details of adults who have gone off the rails.
