""Queen of Suspense" Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke are back with their fifth enthralling mystery in the New York Times bestselling Under Suspicion series; You Don't Own Me finds television producer Laurie Moran stopping at nothing to solve the murder of a celebrity doctor--even as she finds herself in grave danger as a mysterious stalker plots his next move. When we last saw Laurie Moran, she had recently become engaged to her show's former host, Alex Buckley. Since then, the two have been happily planning a summer wedding and honeymoon, preparing for Alex's confirmation to a federal judicial appointment, and searching for the perfect New York City home for their new life together. But then Laurie is approached by Robert and Cynthia Bell, parents of Dr. Martin Bell, a famously charming and talented physician who was shot dead as he pulled into the driveway of his Greenwich Village carriage house five years ago. The Bells are sure that Martin's disgraced and erratic wife, Kendra, carried out the murder. Determined to prove Kendra's guilt and win custody over their grandchildren, they plead with Laurie to feature their son's case on "Under Suspicion," ensuring her that Kendra is willing to cooperate. Kendra has lived under a blanket of suspicion since Martin's death, with the tabloid media depicting her as a secretive, mentally unstable gold-digger. Laurie's show is a chance for her to clear her name. But unbeknownst to the Bells, Kendra has already refused once before to go forward with a re-investigation of her husband's murder, and her statements to the contrary only add to the appearance of guilt. But once Laurie dives into the case, she learns that Martin wasn't the picture-perfect husband, father, and doctor he appeared to be and was carrying secrets of his own. And what does the web of lies ensnaring the Bell family have to do with a dangerous stranger, who gazes at Laurie from afar and thinks, What a pretty girl, I'm sure she's going to be missed.… (meer)

In this installment of the Under Suspicion series, Laurie investigates the murder of a prominent doctor. His parents are convinced the wife is responsible and insist that Laurie produce this crime on her television show. Clark and Burke weave an engaging ‘who done it’ story. This is an entertaining series that is coming to a close with only one more book. ( )

Five years ago, the highly respected Dr Martin Bell was shot dead in his driveway. The perpetrator remained unknown. Now Martin's desperate parents ask Laurie Moran for help: she is to bring the mentally unstable widow, whom they believe to be the culprit, to justice. Laurie digs herself deeper and deeper into the harrowing connections and doesn't even notice that she herself has become the target of a stalker. A stalker whose hatred for her seems to know no bounds.
I was also gripped by this volume of the series. ( )

Knowing Mary Higgins Clark only by her huge reputation, and nothing at all about Alafair Burke, I got into this book somewhat blindly, and found it to be quite enjoyable.
Laurie Moran takes up the cold case of a doctor shot dead by an unknown assailant - suspected to have been hired by his wife - for her TV programme. Her personal life is speeding towards a high with her engagement to the love of her life and the promise of happy times in the company of her loved ones. However, she is being stalked by someone who may or may not be related to the cold case she has opened up. What follows is the race, with Laurie unraveling the years old mystery while being a step away from getting hurt by the stalker.
Though it is the sixth novel in a series, You Don't Own Me works well as a standalone. The plot is intriguing and the pages keep turning thanks to the short chapters and the fast-paced action. A few of the characters are likeable in spite of the lack of space for development. The ending is satisfactory but feels a bit disjointed with the rest of the story.
Overall, this is a light read with a not-too-complex plot and a breezy narrative that is good for a lazy day's reading. ( )

I think the books written by Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke get better with each one. I really enjoyed this one, and I did not guess the ending until almost the very end. I love Mary Higgins Clark but I can definitely see Ms Burke’s touch on these books. Great series! ( )

DNF at 40%.

I don't know why I keep trying to read Mary Higgins Clark books - maybe because she is supposed to be a mystery-writing powerhouse? - they just keep disappointing me. I found this one dull and unengaging, too many background characters and extremely heavy hints as to where the whole thing was going. I won't be reading any more MHC books, they do nothing for me.
