In 1987 art dealer Richard Polsky set aside $100,000 to purchase for his private collection a painting by famed Pop artist Andy Warhol - a process that took him 12 years. His journey, spanning the art world of the go-go 1980s to the recession of the 1990s, is recounted here.

Fascinating look into the world of an art dealer who provides insight into the often bizarre art market in the USA. Polsky's very personal story makes it a fun excursion filled with dirt on some of the characters and the down/dirty of that world. His obsession with Warhol is something I can relate to. ( )

I Bought Andy Warhol is a very accessible look at the world of art dealers and collectors. It was strangely engrossing, even for someone who has no connection to the art world (and really, very limited interest), and you learn a lot while reading it. Polsky writes a colorful story of his quest to get his hands on a Warhol, encounters with his larger-than-life acquaintances in the art world, and witty insights into his profession. Good book ( )

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Received as a gift and my curiosity about the eccentricities of Warhol as my only connection to the art world, I was expecting the memoirs of an art dealer to be tedious. But Polsky didn't write from the assumption that his audience was art aficionados and described his pursuit of a Warhol of his own and all the encounters in a fairly vivid and entertaining way that didn't exclude me. There were a few episodes and stories that seemed to me wedged in for comedic value but often these came across as inside jokes. Those aside, the book was generally amusing with a thread of suspense throughout and very educational. I will never be a collector of even moderately priced art but I have a much better understanding and appreciation of collectors and why they collect. --SA Justus ( )

A very enjoyable read. For anyone who is an artist or enjoys art or has entertained the idea of collecting art, this is a must read. It is part memoir, part history lesson, and part commentary.

Don't read this if you are just interested in Andy Warhol, it is not about him, although, he makes a cameo towards the beginning.

I couldn't put this book down, and when my dad reluctantly borrowed my copy and read it, he said the same thing and bought himself a copy just to have.

A glimpse into the life of an art dealer. Polsky describes the people in his professional circles and the process of finding art for them. Meanwhile, he's looking for the perfect Andy Warhol for his own collection (and budget). An interesting look into a world most people don't know much about. ( )
