A book club pick 😊

Here is a story that grows slowly, putting its threads together – love, grief, loss, trauma, finding yourself again, learning to let the light in.

We meet Violette, a cemetery keeper. My favourite parts of the book were the descriptions of her daily routines, her colleagues (the funeral parlour owners and the gravediggers), the speeches at the funerals that Violette wrote down, the people who come to talk to her. There was a quiet, kind rhythm to the writing that was very pleasant.

“These folks who visit graves daily, they’re the ones who look like ghosts. Who are between life and death.�

“They never say that a man of fifty-five can die from not having been loved, not having been heard, getting too many bills, buying too much on credit, seeing his children grow up and leave home without really saying goodbye.�

One day, a police captain, Julien Seul, arrives - his mother, Iréne, wanted to be buried in Violette’s cemetery, her ashes laid to rest besides a man called Gabriel, a man who was not her husband. Julien wants to know why, and events are set in motion that uncover the past and rebuild the present.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, yet struggled with the second. I believe that this novel is trying to do too much, in too many pages. Things got tangled. There were too many voices that rang false. I usually appreciate when POV’s change so that horrible characters become… not less horrible, bur human. It didn’t quite work this time. Besides, the only voice I wanted to listen to was Violette’s. The story of Iréne and Gabriel went on forever – it was touching at first, but then it descended into a melodrama with French clichés that was mostly exasperating. I wished they were done already.

Violette’s story also gets a bit lost among the tangles. Still, there were harrowing, heartbreaking pages there that were cruel and true. They hit me very hard.

The ending was touching, though, and it made me happy! ( )

"Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori" (editore e/o, traduzione di Alberto Bracci Testasecca, 2019, uscito anche in edizione Mondolibri) è un romanzo che emoziona molto. Commuove toccando nel profondo chi legge. Alterna ai temi della vita (perdita, amore, gioia, sofferenza, rinascita) i temi della morte in cui perdita, amore, sofferenza e rinascita tornano con forza, mescolandosi nel crogiuolo del ricordo di chi resta. L’autrice ne parla con una delicatezza sorprendente, ma ci mette qualcosa di sé, fotografa, sceneggiatrice e scrittrice, in quel colto e continuo richiamo, fatto di citazioni dall’accento d’oltralpe, di cantanti, di canzoni, libri e artisti, con qualche licenza anglosassone come per “Le regole della casa del sidro� di John Irving, il romanzo della vita della nostra protagonista, Violette, a mezza via tra un’adolescenza allo sbando ed una maturità di equilibri ritrovati, anzi riconquistati. Ed è questa sensazione di rinascita che ha reso "Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori" uno tra i libri più letti nel primo lockdown, arrivato in testa alle classifiche con oltre centinaia di migliaia di copie vendute.

Stempera il dolore con un’ironia arguta che ci strappa alla malinconia e ci riporta al pensiero positivo, rinsalda la fragilità dell'esistenza umana con la preziosità delle connessioni che creiamo lungo il nostro cammino. Ci sprona a non sostare troppo nei ricordi, ad andare avanti nonostante il dolore, per scoprire quanto siano importanti e belle le cose semplici della vita. La cucina, le chiacchiere con gli amici, la bellezza di un fiore, le zucchine che si ingrassano nell’orto. Perché nel racconto di Valérie Perrin c’è pure un ché di ritorno alla natura, una specie di ecologia dell’anima oltre che del corpo (non mangia carne), di simbiosi con la terra, il cielo, il mare, i gatti che la seguono tra le lapidi del piccolo cimitero di provincia. Come già in molti hanno voluto sottolineare, "Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori" è una storia di resilienza, ma anche un manuale d’istruzione per riconnettersi con l'essenziale.

La protagonista principale è Violette Toussaint (che già dal nome che in francese significa “giorno dei morti� è tutto un programma), una donna di mezza età, figura affascinante e profondamente umana che lavora come guardiana di un cimitero. La sua vita è stata segnata da tragedie laceranti e il suo lavoro le offre ora un approdo sicuro per elaborare il dolore. Violette si prende cura delle tombe dei defunti e, in un modo o nell'altro, custodisce e conserva con umana passione anche le loro storie ed i segreti che hanno portato con sé nella tomba. La sua crescita e la sua rinascita emotiva sono descritte con grande sensibilità, offrendo al lettore una visione intima del suo mondo interiore. La storia al tempo stesso incanta, usando una scrittura che scorre fluida e suona sempre amichevole, mentre l’intreccio dei personaggi, le loro caratterizzazioni intime, le vicende che li uniscono calamitano pagina dopo pagina chi legge, amplificando l’attesa per un finale che ne nasconde altri, visto che ordito e trama sviluppano un intreccio temporale che disegna più storie e che salta tra il presente ed il passato. E Valérie Perrin è davvero brava nel gestire queste variazioni temporali, mantenendo il controllo del timone e la rotta, nonostante i cambiamenti cronologici.

E’ questo un approccio narrativo che aggiunge una dimensione in cui il senso dell’attesa cresce parallelamente al mistero alla storia, permettendo al lettore di scoprire gradualmente i segreti sepolti nel cimitero e nella vita di Violette, una donna sola, dopo che il marito è partito per un viaggio di sola andata. Fino a quando compare alla sua porta un poliziotto di Marsiglia: la madre ha lasciato scritto nelle ultime volontà che le sue ceneri dovranno riposare sulla tomba di un avvocato a lui sconosciuto, sepolto da anni nel cimitero.

"Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori" si sposta nello spazio e nel tempo oltre che tra due mondi, l’essere e il non essere, ed è per questo che la percezione di ciò che racconta credo muti in funzione dell’età di chi lo legge. Non deve sorprendere, in quanto il tema di un’esistenza terrena che prima o poi finisce, si offre a differenti percezioni in base a quanto ognuno di noi senta più o meno lontano il punto di passaggio dalla vita terrena a quella di un mondo fatto di tutto o di nulla, o rispetto a quanto il peso delle perdite subite nella propria esistenza trovi un equilibrio con le rinascite di chi ci ricorderà o ci dimenticherà.

«Non piangete la mia morte, celebrate la mia vita». In fondo Violette tende una mano ai due mondi, si prende cura dei morti come fa con i vivi, consola e ascolta questi ultimi così come lucida e difende dalle erbacce dell’oblio chi non c’è più, ma è comunque stato. Conosce tutti i nomi sulle tombe, le loro date di nascita e di dipartita, se scorge un sepolcro lasciato all’incuria, se ne prende cura. Violette annota tutto: chi è morto, chi era presente alle esequie, quali sono stati i discorsi e le canzoni dei funerali, le lapidi e gli epitaffi apposti sulla tomba. Violette rappresenta la memoria di coloro che sono scomparsi e, in fondo, pensare che esista qualcuno così ci conforta.

Il libro è una clessidra dove la luce e il buio s’infiltrano uno nell’altro, si perpetuano in questo continuo capovolgimento. “C’è qualcosa più forte della morte, ed è la presenza degli assenti nella memoria dei vivi�. In questo romanzo i nostri ricordi sepolti riemergono con forza, si manifestano senza vergogna e ci rigano il viso e l’anima.

Picking up a book about a cemetery keeper made me think this would be a book only about death and grief, and while this is a book about death and grief, it’s more so a book about life. Fresh Water for Flowers shows that cemeteries are more than sedentary resting places. There’s a lot of life within her gates and beneath her trees: clandestine lovers visiting illicit graves, mischievous kids climbing over midnight gates, talk of town gossip and rumored ghouls, digging and caring and remembering and living.

Violette, a young orphan girl with a Victor-Hugo-tragic past, grows up to have a little girl named Leo—only to lose her tragically. Through nonconsecutive snapshots, we watch the pieces of Violette’s sad story unfold to an even sadder reality when her young daughter dies, but then we get to watch her bloom and come alive—mainly through Sasha’s nurturing in the cemetery garden. It’s there where she learns to live in death as a cemetery keeper, where she experiences rebirth through a burial garden and a kindred gardener.

Part philosophy, part mystery, part tragedy, Fresh Water for Flowers is a beautiful and melancholic story of a mother’s grief: “‘An anthology of great woes, small joys and hopes’� (310). ( )

So lovely, even as it dealt with people in difficult situations. I really enjoyed how all the characters were so fully developed. I'm looking forward to reading other books by her. ( )

Fresh Water for Flowers by Valerie Perrin is a moving novel of love, loss , grief and life. The protagonist Violette is a cemetery keeper who lives alone in a house on the premises of the cemetery she looks after. Abandoned by her husband years ago she spends her days taking great care of the cemetery , growing flowers , cleaning headstones , reading epitaphs and meeting people to whom she provides comfort in their times of bereavement and distress.

�My present life is a present from heaven. As I say to myself every morning, when I open my eyes.�

In her, the author paints a portrait of a woman whose past is marked by much loss and personal tragedy but who lives her life with dignity and grace, forging friendships with the people she works with and those who come to grieve .

"For a woman like me, not feeling compassion would be like being an astronaut, a surgeon, a volcanologist, or a geneticist. Not part of my planet, or my skill set.�

The novel does not only tell Violette’s story but also the stories of the different people in her life- not only her personal relationships but those she meets in the course of her work and even those the graves of whom she tends - their loves, their lives and their secrets. The author introduces us to an interesting mix of characters (both alive and deceased) whose stories become a part of Violette’s own.

This is a slow paced novel full of heart and wisdom. This is not a quick read and it does take a little time to get fully invested in the story .But it is a poignant and emotional novel that leaves a lasting impression. ( )
