I did not realize this was a pt 2, so i took some time and found book 2.
I enjoyed this book however, there is a lot i could have done without (ex. Cruelty to animals). Monsters has a lot of action happening in it, never seems to be a dull moment and i enjoy that. Also, the fact that he brought old book monsters to life i find super amazing, if it wasnt for that fact i probably would not have cared for the book at all. Im Nostalgic ;) If you dont mind horror and some gore, this is the book for you! ( )

Being the second book in a series, I borrowed the first one from the library and read it, just in case I found this one confusing or hard to follow. I needn't have worried as this one could stand alone, although it probably did help a little.

The story follows Edgar Brim and his friends as they descend into the world of Frankenstein. The action is mainly in London, but eventually ends up in the Arctic, via Orkney. The characters are well-written and the plot moves along fairly well. The book is filled with literary clues and pays homage to some of the classics and writers of the late 19th century. Even a young H.G. Wells makes an appearance at one point. The book could be a good way of introducing some of these classics to the younger reader, at whom this book is aimed.

Now that I've read the first two books in the Dark Missions series, I will definitely have to read the third instalment, as this one ended with many questions left unanswered. ( )

Monster is the second book in YA series The Dark Missions of Edgar Brim by Shane Peacock. I hadn't read the first book in the series and, although the plot works fine as a standalone, it would have helped if there was some background given to the characters so that it would have been easier to understand their actions eg who are these children, how did they meet, how did they become monster hunters, who is the hag Edgar mentions, who is the character called William Shakespeare and what is his role in the group - maybe just a little blurb about each at the beginning of the book. Overall, though, I found the story quite enjoyable - an homage to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with plenty of action and twists and turns to keep the reader involved. It should be noted that there is a great deal of gore and, well, bloody mayhem that might not be suitable for a reader under the age of twelve.

The second book in the Edgar Brim trilogy is just as gory and action packed as the first. Edgar and his friends had just finished vanquishing one monster when they discover another monster has murdered their mentor, Dr. Lear. As the mourn the loss of Dr. Lear, they are forced to hunt down this monster and kill him before he kills again. Their chase takes them all the way to the Arctic where they finally face their foe. This a well written, action packed gothic mystery that will certainly keep your interest. The gore factor is high so skip this series if you have a weak stomach. All in all a fun read. Another spine-chilling race to rid an evil is set before us in Monster. When the truth finally is revealed and the four, Edgar, Tilly, Lucy, and Jon figure out who it is, they find themselves in imminent danger. Yet, they know that they, and they alone, have to destroy it or die trying. Following the abomination to the far reaches of the Arctic, they are in a desolate place where no one can help them but themselves as they face this evil personified.

Once again, exceptionally well-written, with creepiness abounding, and terror at every corner, this second book in the series is just as riveting...and the ending hints at more evil to come....cue the dark music, once again.

I give this book 4 1/2 stars.
