Mooi boek waarmee je gelijk een kijkje krijgt in de geschiedenis en de cultuur van Iran. Het begint in 1953 als Roya en Bahman elkaar zien in een winkel voor kantoorartikelen. De eigenaar is een vriendelijke man die ziet dat er een aantrekkingskracht tussen de twee jonge mensen is. Hij geeft de jongelui af en toe wat tijd met elkaar, wat in Iran en in die tijd echt niet toegelaten is. Hij verdwijnt af en toe naar de opslagruimte achter zijn winkel en laat ze even nader met elkaar kennis maken. Maar de moeder van Bahman heeft andere plannen met haar zoon en ze weet de jong geliefden uit elkaar te krijgen. Roya is ontroostbaar en haar vader stuurt haar en haar zus naar Amerika om te studeren. Daar leert ze een zachtaardige man, Walter kennen waar ze uiteindelijk mee trouwt en op een rustige manier gelukkig mee is. Door een toevallige ontmoeting komt Roya er achter dat Bahman ook in Amerika is gaan wonen en niet ver bij haar vandaan in een verpleeghuis woont. Teheran, 1953. Roya brengt de uren na school graag door in de boekhandel van meneer Fakhri, die vol staat met boeken, pennen, inktpotjes en schrijfpapier. De kasten met literatuur en poëzie oefenen de grootste aantrekkingskracht op haar uit. Wanneer Roya op een dag een andere jonge klant ziet, Bahman, is het liefde op het eerste gezicht. Roya heeft met Bahman afgesproken op een plein, om samen naar een huwelijksloket te gaan, maar op de bewuste dag wordt er een coup gepleegd die Iran voor altijd zal veranderen. In de chaos komt Bahman niet opdagen. Wekenlang zoekt Roya hem, maar het mag niet baten. Tot bijna veertig jaar later, wanneer Roya door een speling van het lot eindelijk de kans krijgt om Bahman de vragen te stellen die haar al die tijd achtervolgd hebben.
