"Devon Burges is in the throes of a high-risk birth when she learns of her dear friend's murder. The police quickly name another friend as the chief suspect, but Devon doesn't buy it, and despite her difficult recovery, she decides to investigate. Haunted by postpartum problems that manifest as a cruel voice in her head, Devon is barely getting by. Yet her instincts are still sharp, and she's bent on proving her friend's innocence. But as Devon digs into the evidence, the voice in her head grows more insistent, the danger more intense. Each layer is darker, more disturbing, and she's not sure she, or her baby, can survive what lies at the truth."--Provided by publisher.… (meer)

Billed as a psychological thriller. I did not find that to be the case. A book is not a thriller because there is a murder and the wrong person is accused. A book is not a psychological thriller because a person hears voices. I listened to this on audio and perhaps if I had read it instead, it would have been more appealing. The voice inside the main character's head spoke frequently and it was always so grating and harsh; which perhaps, was supposed to be. I just found a lot of things improbable, which doesn't make for a psychological thriller for me. I have this book in my audio library, so I may go back and give it another go sometime later. This was the author's book debut. 10 hours 14 minutes ( )

This book was incredible in its intensity and its characterizations. It has a plot that is crafted with the misdirection of a gifted illusionist bringing the reader to the point of solution and then disclosing that that solution is incorrect. Lillie writes with a fluent prose and a seamless narrative that keeps the reader turning pages. Devon's friend, Belina, is murdered on the same day that Devon is rushed to the hospital for a premature delivery that turns into an emergency C-section. She is not fully recovered when a college friend is accused of Belina's murder and Devon feels compelled to launch her own investigation. Suffering from symptoms of post-partum depression she struggles with the return of the "Little Voices" that once marked a traumatic childhood. Can she prove her college friend is innocent? Is he innocent? I confess this is one of a few mysteries that kept me from solving the case before the solution was revealed. Lillie's characters are fully developed and complex, and she writes with emotion, crafting a story that integrates the narrative, the characterizations and the plot to bring everything together in a climactic conclusion. I look forward to her next book! ( )

When I read the first chapter of this book, I was immediately interested. However, the book took a turn into a financial crime story tied into a murder, which I didn’t expect. There was a lot of detail on fishing boats and licenses, and money laundering. Devon Burges has just had a baby at only 28 weeks gestation. While getting prepped for surgery for a C-section, she hears that her friend has been found dead.
When Devon is home, she hears “little voices” in her head telling her she is a bad mother, she isn’t enough, etc. She is dealing with post-partum depression, but she feels the need to investigate her friend’s death. Another friend is arrested for murder, but Devon believes he is innocent.
I wanted to really like this book, but I felt it got bogged down in all the financial detail. The ending was a bit of a surprise. ( )

I wanted to like this book, but I was nearly a third of the way and started skipping the "voices" before I started caring what happened. It was a nice mystery, but I found the premise to be contrived and the characters underdeveloped. ( )
