I was a bit disappointed by this story, I remember that I thought Shadowmancer and Wormwood were amazing and this novel did not deliver on the same level. Of course I am older now so I may have just grown away from this style.

There was some really interesting parts to the story but there was an awful lot of wordy dialogue to get through between these highlights. I genuinely think the book would have been better had it been half the length and been a fast paced adventure. ( )

Continues the story of Raphah and his friends as they escape from the evil Demurral to 18th century London. A good page turner of a story of their trials, and how they get caught in the snares of Salamander Street, where they had hoped for sanctuary. Ghosts, curses, illegal drugs and shape changers fill out the cast of people who defy God and the heavens. Recommended. ( )

Shadowmancer: The Curse of Salamander Street ist inhaltlich der direkte Nachfolger von Shadowmancer. Beide gehören zum Shadowmancer-Quartett: Wormwood und Tersias spielen im selben Setting - England ca. im 18. Jahrhundert, Magische Kräfte kommen entweder aus der Hölle oder aus dem Himmel (und genau da lag wohl auch mein Problem mit dem Buch).

Ich habe dieses Buch im Rahmen einer der Book-Whisper-Challenge zum Thema "Dämonen" gelesen und war am Ende froh, dass es sich wirklich als passend herausstellte.

Im Prolog heißt es: "It was a battle so intense that even the devil himself and all his demons could not overcome the forces of heaven."

Der Roman teilt sich überwiegend in zwei Ebenen: Die Erlebnisse von Kate und Thomas, die mit dem Kapitän Jacob Crane nach und in London unterwegs sind, sowie die Erlebnisse von Beadle, dem (losgesagten) Diener von Obadiah Demurral (einem Dämonenbeschwörer) und dem totgeglaubten Ethopier Raphah (durch den die göttliche Kraft wirkt). Beadle und Raphah treffen auf Reisegefährten, die alle mehr oder weniger undurchsichtige Gründe haben, genau wie sie nach London zu wollen - und das Zusammentreffen war wohl weniger zufällig, als es auf den ersten Blick erscheinen mag.

Auf der Reise passiert so einiges unerklärliches und die Reisenden treffen auf einen 'Höllenhund': "It was a creature, but not one that this world knows much of - I saw the look of its red eyes and knew." "Since the sky-quake and the coming of the comet all kinds of beasts seem to be roaming the world."

Aber auch in London traf man auf übernatürliche Wesen: "Isabella had been transformed. Now she stood, dark and sinister, a human snake that stared upon her victim through eyes of fire". "This isn't the real world anyway, it's all an illusion. We're already dead and this is hell. Galphus is _the devil_ and this is our punishment." "All that comes is _a demon_ from hell, sold to the world as the mother of God."

Alles in allem also eine nicht unspannende Reise-Geschichte oder auch ein Entwicklungsroman - der mir von seiner Kernaussage her aber etwas zu missionarisch war. Was in Anbetracht der damaligen Hauptbeschäftigung des Autors auch nicht verwunderlich ist - laut bbc ein 'Anglican priest and exorcist'.

Mein Fazit: keine schlechte Geschichte, aber nicht der von mir bevorzugte Stil. ( )
