Light From Uncommon Stars interweaves the stories of three characters who couldn't be more different. Katrina is a runaway trans youth who needs to be constantly on guard from those who want to abuse or harm her. Shizuka is a talented violinist turned violin tutor who makes a literal deal with the devil to provide the souls of seven of her students in exchange for the restoration of her fame. Lan is starship captain who has led her family of fugitives from a galactic war to a pre-spacefaring Earth, where she sets up a donut shop as cover. These disparate elements suprisingly come together nicely in a treatise about human kindness in a cold, cruel world. While the writing itself is a bit rough (I found the perspective shifts to be jarring), the book delivers both thematically and narratively, and with its flawed but ultimately likeable characters. Katrina is a young transwoman kicked out of her parents' house, expecting nothing but abuse. She also plays violin and that is what connects her to Shizuka Satomi, the Queen of Hell, a famous violin player and teacher. Meanwhile, the Tran family has escaped from a galactic war and taken over a local donut shop when the previous owners retired. Captain Lan falls for Shizuka and slowly the two women become close. At the same time, Lan's holographic daughter becomes friends with Katrina. I was pleased that the novel has a happy ending. It takes a bit of adjustment to get into this tale of a musical prodigy/transgender runaway meeting a teacher with a daemon from hell on track to collect her or her student's soul but all can be changed by the space aliens in their doughnut shop/space portal, but it is worth it. Cindy Kay's narration of the audio book is great. An odd blend of science fiction and fantasy with happily-ever-after endings for everyone (well, everyone we care about anyway). Though it deals with some heavy topics—a trans girl running away from an abusive father, an intergalactic plague of existential despair, a woman about to lose her soul—it’s unrelentingly upbeat. The transformational power of music makes everything right in the end. In fact, if there had been just little bit more sadness, a touch more of the underlying tragedies, it would have been a more affecting book. As it was, it seemed a little too light to be a great book for me.

"Good Omens meets The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet in Ryka Aoki's Light From Uncommon Stars, a defiantly joyful adventure set in California's San Gabriel Valley, with cursed violins, Faustian bargains, and queer alien courtship over fresh-made donuts. Shizuka Satomi made a deal with the devil: to escape damnation, she must entice seven other violin prodigies to trade their souls for success. She has already delivered six. When Katrina Nguyen, a young transgender runaway, catches Shizuka's ear with her wild talent, Shizuka can almost feel the curse lifting. She's found her final candidate. But in a donut shop off a bustling highway in the San Gabriel Valley, Shizuka meets Lan Tran, retired starship captain, interstellar refugee, and mother of four. Shizuka doesn't have time for crushes or coffee dates, what with her very soul on the line, but Lan's kind smile and eyes like stars might just redefine a soul's worth. And maybe something as small as a warm donut is powerful enough to break a curse as vast as the California coastline. As the lives of these three women become entangled by chance and fate, a story of magic, identity, curses, and hope begins, and a family worth crossing the universe for is found"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Ahora quiero donuts. ( )
