I was drawn to this book as I have Irish ancestry, I spent several days on Achill Island in my teens (our tent was demolished in a storm!) and I am a fantasy lover in general. I loved the premise of drawing history, magic and romance together. Overall an enjoyable book with an unexpected dramatic ending. I found the character of Bridget very well drawn except for the lack of Roman Catholic morals!! I think that maybe the author shows a lack of knowledge of Irish Catholicism in general as a huge force in that environment. Donn, the main character is also likeable and well thought out. Incidentally I love the cover illustration and I think it shows the general feeling of the book. There is a lot going on, possibly too much, showing that the author has had ideas bubbling in his head for some time maybe! , I think there is definitely room for a sequel. This is historical fantasy about Don who embarks on a heroic quest filled with rebels, Irish knights and mystic. Don hopes to not only secure wealth but the love of his life. This story if filed with mystery and Irish mythology which makes for an interesting story. Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. A historical fantasy during the early XIX c. Ireland has to be good.... Well unfortunately it`s not true. The prose is bumpy, the descriptions are muddy and boring, the characters are uninteresting, the dialogues are unrealistic. I really wanted to like the book but it`s just not good. I simply didn`t want to know what happening on the next page and that`s the worst can happen when reading a book. Set in Ireland during the time of Napoleon (around 1800), this is the story of a young man named Donn. Intending to save enough money to recover his family's land, Donn joins a crew of rebels and Irish knights as they attempt to restore an ancient kingdom. It involves recovering the lost treasure of Tuatha de Danaan. Donn has all sorts of adventures in his travels. He battles faerie guardians and Barbary pirates. There are giant sea creatures that can sink a ship very easily, and brawls in foreign ports that quickly turn deadly. Uppermost in Donn's mind is the lovely Bridget, waiting for him back home. Or, will she wait? Her parents are pushing her to marry someone more "acceptable." Does Donn survive the voyage? Do Donn and Bridget live happily ever after? This is a half-fantasy/half-historical novel, and the author does an excellent job. The reader is right in the middle of the story, with enough romance and action for anyone. Here is some Really Good Writing. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
An Irish tale you've never been told. As the last days of mythical Ireland draw to a close, experience the collision of the magical and early-nineteenth-century worlds. On a mission to secure the funds to recover his family land, Donn, an adolescent boy, joins a crew including Irish knights and escaped rebels as they set sail to restore an ancient kingdom. He leaves his new love, Bridget, behind on Achill Island, hoping that he can return to her a propertied gentleman and ask for her hand in marriage. Will Bridget wait for him or marry another? During his travels, the newly knighted Donn faces legendary creatures trying to prevent the recovery of the lost treasures of the Tuatha de Danann. Through foamy seas, holy knights of a former age sail for glory and God. In the chaotic time of Europe's struggle for liberty, during the Napoleonic age, find these Irish rebels cutting through Barbary pirates and faerie guardians alike. When on land, they ride their horses, noble of spirit, past the perils that lie in wait. Will Donn, after years of high adventure, return to his beloved and reclaim his family land? With witches, demons, dancing faeries, and a mischievous clurichaun, this romantic historical fantasy is sure to awaken your heart. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

The Rock of Achill is a historical fantasy set in Ireland, with fairies and mystical creatures as well as rich landlords and struggling peasants.
For most of the novel, a brave young man called Donn adventures abroad, while dreaming of the day he’ll return with enough wealth to reclaim his family’s land and marry his love Bridget. Donn’s love for a powerful horse leads him to a rebel crew, led by Cathal, and he joins them on their travels, fighting by their side, but always hoping to earn enough to return home and be with Bridget. Cathal hopes to find a powerful, mythic sword that will help him reclaim Ireland, and his search for information about this sword leads the rebels to distant ports, where they encounter both human and magical adversaries. Whether they encounter bruxas or battles, the rebels use their quick thinking to keep moving forward on their quest. It’s an epic fantasy adventure, a bit like stories of King Arthur’s men on quests, but with Irish heroes and myth.
Fans of Celtic myth will enjoy the world of The Rock of Achill, but it’s still accessible without any background knowledge, as the characters fully explain the myths and heroes, and at it’s heard, this is the quest of a young man to return to home to his love ( )
