Not as funny as some of her other books but still a good read overall. Erma talks about her life and marriage. Things she wants to change about her husband, wanting children and then having them also wanting her kids to get married. ( ) Erma Bombeck has a unique way of looking at life and of writing about it. She shines through the pages as being a person who can take the sickness with the health and tries her damndest to see the funny in something that could fill you with despair. While many of the stories are laugh-out-loud funny they also induced a wry smile occasionally and when she spoke about her miscarriages I nearly cried. What she doesn't mention sometimes is almost as important as what she does mention. I would recommend it. A memoir by humorist Erma Bombeck of her marriage and family. Funny, true to life, and studded with the occasional departure-of-style gem. For example, there is a piece about the death of her husband's best man from heart disease at 33 that was a real heartstring-tugger. One of my favorite passages is from late in the book after Erma has had a mastectomy and Bill an emergency appendectomy, and as their son's wedding looms, Bill says "I hope we get through this before something else falls off." It was also a surprise to learn that it was true that the Bombecks lived across from Phil Donahue for five years in Centerburg, Ohio, before either one was struck by fame and fortune. Somehow the two of them fit, and I can see them being good friends. Her death a few years ago saddens me more after having read some of her work. She was a truly humane and funny woman. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"I now pronounce you husband and wife." There are few phrases as sobering, with the possible exceptions of "We have lift-off" and "This country is at war." Yet, as they have done for centuries, millions of courageous men and women continue to walk down the aisle every year, without so much as a job description. Now, in her most autobiographical book, Erma Bombeck puts it all in loving and laughing perspective, as she looks back on her own forty-three-year-but-who's-counting marriage.
