Good essay collection, I related to some parts more than others. The author was able to make herself relatable. This is a delightful collection of essays. They spoke to the heart of the matter and were honest and emotional in their approach. It was also an enlightening experience to step into the author's shoes and live out her true life experiences.I really highly recommend this book. This is a very nice essay collection from an author who in many ways was well before her time. Pollack was one of the first women to graduate from Yale, and with a BS in physics no less, which is very much a male-dominated field. She's also Jewish, which was common in her part of upstate New York but very much an anomaly in many of the other places she's lived. These essays are largely biographical, and they paint some interesting portraits of what it's like to be a woman in a man's world, and to reflect on her long and storied career. Would recommend. In this collection of essays, the author exhibits three modes: being preachy, self-pity, and navel-gazing. Not being particularly interested in any of these, I found very little to appreciate about this collection of essays, well-written though they were.FTC Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for this review. As with any collection of essays, this one has some good ones and some less good ones. But I found all of them to be very readable and they all held my interest, even though some got a bit repetitive. The only thing that grated on me was the author's continuous insistence that she grew up in "upstate" NY. Nobody who lives south of Albany (or west of Schenectady for that matter) should be able to make that claim. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
"Pollack shares with poignant humor and candid language the trials of being smart and female in a world that is just learning to imagine equality between the sexes. Maybe It's Me is a question all smart women have asked themselves. Pollack's autobiographical essays take us on a roller-coaster ride from gratifyingly humorous street-level stories of innocent curiosity to the calculated meanness of tweeny girls to the defensive strategies of threatened men to the 20,000-foot overview of how we all got here"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
