The Devil Wears Prada meets Far from the Tree in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kelly Yang's powerful love story about two teens searching for their place in the world. Serene dreams of making couture dresses even more stunning than her mom's, but for now she's an intern at her mom's fashion label. When her mom receives a sudden diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, all that changes. Serene has to take over her mother's business overnight while trying to figure out what happened with her dad in Beijing. He left before she was born, and Serene wants to find him, even if it means going against her mom's one request--never look back. Lian Chen moved from China to Serene's mostly white Southern California beach town a year ago. He doesn't fit in at school, where kids mispronounce his name. His parents don't care about what he wants to do--comedy--and push him toward going to MIT engineering early. Lian thinks there's nothing to stick around for until one day he starts a Chinese Club after school . . . and Serene walks in. Worlds apart in the high school hierarchy, Serene and Lian soon find refuge in each other, falling in love as they navigate life-changing storms. * Junior Library Guild Selection * A Common Sense Selection *… (meer)

Too cliched and predictable. Plus it is packed with a lot of issues - absent father, ill mother (cancer), prejudice, bullying, immigrant parent expectations, revenge porn, and more. ( )

I loved this sweet and moving YA story about finding the strength to pursue your dreams and fit in when you feel like an outsider. I think I pretty much devoured this in one listen. The writing was simple and flowed nicely and I could genuinely relate to the predicaments that the teens found themselves in. There are a few Asian family tropes in there and some unlikely business scenarios but they weren't unreasonable enough to have me rolling my eyes. Very enjoyable! ( )

A highly entertaining, vigorously-paced romance with plenty of contrast and tension to keep things interesting. There's rich and privileged vs immigrant, Asian in a sea of white, relaxed mom and tiger mom, and of course Lian vs Cameron. Serene's involvement with her mother's couture fashion company adds glamour. Lian's mom comes off as a bit over the top but not far off the mark, lol. ( )

digital audio teen fiction (8+ hours, two narrator voices Natalie Naudus and David Lee Huynh) - romantic comedy between a Chinese-American girl whose single mother fashion designer is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and a first-generation Chinese-American 17 y.o. boy who wants to be a stand-up comic instead of an engineer like his parents want.

Huynh's comedic timing on the digital audio for Lian's voice is perfect; Naudus does a great job with Serene's parts as well. The cancer storyline is heartbreaking (have tissues handy!) and the burgeoning romance between the two main characters (one assimilated and popular, the other maintaining his connections with friends in Beijing but who is bullied) is super sweet. A solid teen offering form Kelly Yang — one that doesn’t shy away from tackling big topics: from parental cancer to Chinese immigrant experience to bullying and pressure and finding your own way. Loved the setting of the high fashion house. Loved even more that the teens in question offer some real solutions to the problems they are faced with. Sweet romance in the center, but one that’s based on self respect.
