Not my usual choice of a read, but lent to me by my octagenarian neighbour as we were talking about Suilven (I've seen Edie and there wasn't enough Suilven in it for me). I probably know SH mostly from I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue to be honest, and my friend always describes her as 'married to John Thaw' which gets my goat a bit. Anyway, I romped through it, and enjoyed her down-to-earth sense about pacifism, her way of getting people to talk and her education work - all of which was news to me. I also marvelled at her pain management. Her courage is inspiring, and I'm glad lockdown helped her find nature, even if it did quickly turn Hitchcockian. Thank goodness she can laugh through her rage and age. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Sheila Hancock seemed to be managing old age. She had weathered widowhood, taking on acting roles that would have been demanding for a woman of half her years. She had energy, friends, a devoted family, a lovely home. She could still remember her lines. So why, in her late eighties, did she suddenly feel so furious? Shocking diagnoses, Brexit and bereavement seemed to knock her from every quarter. And that was before lockdown. Home alone, classified as 'extremely vulnerable', she found herself yelling at the TV and talking to the pigeons. But she could at least take a good long look at life: her work and family, her beliefs - and, uncomfortable as it might be to face, her future. Now, one of Britain's best-loved actors opens up about her ninth decade, showing that despite age, despite rage, there are always reasons for joy. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
