"The discovery of an Amish bishop's remains leads chief of police Kate Burkholder to unearth a chilling secret in this new thriller from bestselling author Linda Castillo. Over a decade ago, beloved Amish bishop Ananias Stoltzfus disappeared without a trace. The mystery of what happened to the esteemed old man has haunted his small Pennsylvania community for years. When skeletal remains showing evidence of foul play are unearthed and revealed to be the bishop's, his disappearance becomes even more sinister. Unhappy with the local investigation, Amish elders arrive in Painters Mill and ask chief of police Kate Burkholder for help. Kate quickly realizes she has a very personal connection to the crime. The handsome Amish man who stands accused of the murder, Jonas Bowman, was Kate's first love. Forced to confront a painful episode from her past, Kate travels to Pennsylvania's Kishacoquillas Valley, an isolated area where the Amish culture differs dramatically from the traditions in which she was raised. Kate learns that Stoltzfus was charismatic and highly respected, but she soon hears about a dark side to this complex man. What was he hiding that brought a series of tragedies to his family and resulted in his own brutal death? Someone doesn't want Kate asking questions. But even after being accosted and threatened in the dead of night, she refuses to back down. As evidence emerges, Kate must ask herself: Is she too close to the case-and to Jonas-to see clearly? There's a killer in the Valley who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried. Will they get to Kate before she can expose the truth? Or will the bishop's secrets remain hidden forever?"--… (meer)

Thank you NetGalley and St Martin's Press/Minotaur Books for providing this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

I had no idea when I chose to read this book that it was knee deep into a series I haven’t read. I guess I will see how well I can follow. If there were less than 13 books before this I would have read them! From other reviews it seems this book can be a standalone novel.

I did find this novel to present enough information that it can stand alone. It centers on Chief Police Kate Burkholder of Painters Mill, Ohio. She is asked by town elders in Belleville, Pennsylvania's where Kate was raised to look into the case. She lived in the Kishacoquillas Valley of Amish Country until she was 18 years-old. She is asked to help find the killer of Amish bishop, Ananias Stoltzfus, a dark, complex man who was brutally killed. Although this occurred in another state when she is told the main suspect is Kate's first love, Jonas Bowman she knows she needs to be involved even though she hasn't seen him since she left. Due to conflict of interest, Kate is asked to step back but when she is threatened she thinks that she might be closer to this case than she realized.

It is filled with suspense with reflections to the past and present secrets. I can imagine the previous books must add to the backdrop of the characters development and history. ( )

Love the Police Chief, Kate Burkholder. Nice to catch up with her and her partner. As I was reading, one thing popped into my head from all the others in this series. How many cars will Kate wreck? It seems to be a recurring plot twist. I wonder if Ms. Castillo knows some of us keep track of her wrecks. Makes me chuckle every time. Hope there are more to come. Have to keep up with her "family". I truly enjoy this series. Kate Burkholder is chief of police in an Amish town and is called upon by some elders from another area to look into the arrest of her former boyfriend from years ago.

A murder victim's bones have been unearthed after being buried 18 years ago so Kate has a lot on her plate to sort out who/what/when.

I love the Kate/Tomasetti relationship and look forward to many more novels with them.
I also love my public library for providing this book for my reading pleasure. ( )

This may be one of my favorite Kate Burkholder books because it gives the reader more insight into her character and her teen years. When a bishop in PA is found dead, a childhood friend of Kate's, Jonas Bowman, is arrested. Elders from the community come to OH to speak with Kate about the murder, and she leaves OH to see if she can understand the circumstances around the murder.
What Kate uncovers is a long held secret that the Amish family has held under wraps for years, but when someone could no longer stomach the secret, others took matters in their own hands. Kate is able to discover this - but is put in danger. She wants to clear her childhood friend's name, but at what cost.
I liked the story, I liked the characters, I liked the motive and the shame behind it. I liked the Amish coming together to help. I just really enjoy the Kate Burkholder series.
I also had the opportunity to listen to the audio of this book - and did not like the way the narrator made so many characters sound like children. (e.g. Jonas's wife) ( )
