I struggled with this and inthe end gave up less than 90 pages to go. I rarely not finish a book, once commenced. yes there are books which I have commenced but not finished ( hello Joyces' Ulysses!) but which I intend to go back to and finish (indeed in the case of that one I have been back at least 4 times). But the number i have not finished and have no present intention of return to ever amounts to no more than 2 or 3 including this one. Perhaps I wasn't in the right mood (but I have tried for a fortnight now, and have read other books in the interim). And it was not the 'horror' tag associated with the book. I simply did not catch my imagination and I had no idea as to what the author was seeking to achieve. Time for me to move on. Big Ship 6 October 2023 A mentally unbalanced woman kills herself, and her son and daughter-in-law deal with the aftermath. It turns out both of these people are also pretty damaged, and the resulting descent into madness is insane. This book started out fairly normally but then became so bizarre that I became disinterested and annoyed. I finished it but considered it to have been a waste of my time. This is described as a feminist work in some reviews, which is perhaps why I, as a male, found the narrator's voice a little offputting at time--but perhaps since I listed to the audiobook I am hearing the voice differently than if I had read it. l thought the narrator was very good, however, and her portrayal of the emotional state of a woman, coming from a terrible childhood, who has found her perfect mate, and is obsessive about becoming a mother was convincing. And as the story progresses, things become quite a bit clearer--but no spoilers here. I thought this would be an actual work of horror, but it really isn't. At times, the author, through the narrator, makes keen observations about people and things. At other times, she is obsessed with feces. The narrative is a no holds barred outburst at times of obscenities, which are both effective and repulsive. It is certainly a unique story, though, at least to me, and I give the author credit for that. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Something about it was just too painful to read. Felt tedious and I just wanted it to end
