Lucy isn't ready for a life-changing journey when it comes knocking; she just wants to keep everything the same as the day her stepfather died. Unfortunately, expenses have overtaken her small family business, forcing her to do something quickly to keep it afloat. When Lucy finds out she has inherited a bookshop in England, she travels to see it, intent on selling the property as soon as possible. But once there she meets a wonderfully kind group of villagers, including a handsome bookseller, who challenge her decision to make a quick sale. What begins as a way to make money for her business in Seattle becomes an experience that uncovers family secrets and reveals the kindness of strangers. In England, Lucy just might rewrite her past in order to follow her heart. Step into the warm English village of Wakeby and enjoy a savory breakfast at Hollyhock B&B, take a romantic walk in the luscious summer gardens and find yourself among new friends at Baslow's Bookshop.… (meer)

Lucy Welland’s stepfather Paul asked Lucy to watch over her brother Aaron and her mother. Lucy made that promise to Paul and also said she would protect everything he’d work for. As sales at Wellslept Mattresses have been continually dropping the promise has become harder and harder to keep even with infusions of her own money. In the midst of tough conversations with her family Lucy receives a letter from a solicitor in England requesting she come as an inheritor to sign documents for her father’s estate for a property with a business. Lucy is torn. Does she stay in Seattle keeping a promise to her stepfather or go to England for a father that abandoned her?

I’ve read many books of an individual inheriting a bookshop but this one has several interesting twists. One of my favorites was the use of the setting differences not only between the US and England but between a revitalizing city and quaint small town.

As a reader I find novels about bookstores intrinsically comforting. Change the word to bookshop and it seems as though upon opening the book cover there is a promise of entering a cozy atmosphere that is charming and soothing. Softly tucked in this story are meaningful messages about moving forward after loss. Janis Wildy’s author debut delivered the promise in heartwarming and uplifting ways. ( )

The English Bookshop was a relaxing heartwarming and charming read! This is the kind of book that is perfect to escape in for a little while. The descriptions of the bookshop and the town were wonderful! The characters are amazing! Jane was a wonderful character. She has hit a rough patch but the way she overcomes it is inspiring to read. This really is a beautiful story! It was a fast read for me. This will definitely be one of those books that I pick up a few times!

Thank Kate Rock Book Tours and Janis Wildy for sharing this beautiful story with me!

The English Bookshop. Janis Wildy. 2022. A predictable romance. Lucy, her brother, and her mother run her late step-father’s handmade mattress shop. The business is losing out the super stores and online shops. Her brother is working to sell their business to one of the more profitable outfits. Lucy is totally against this and in a stew about it when she gets a letter from a law office in England telling her she has inherited her late father’s bookshop. Lucy heads to the shop hoping that selling it will provide enough capital to save the mattress business. Once there, she falls in love with the shop, the little village, and the manager of the store, a handsome young artist. Will she sell the bookshop to save the mattress company? No surprise here ( )

Lucy lifted the page on her wall calendar and stood still for a minute, transported dreamily into the English countryside.

In each book was a possibility of joy: a magical place to visit, a hero or heroine to meet, or a new friend to make. With grief, books allowed a chance to revisit a story you once shared with the person you had lost.
