A bone-chilling Chicago winter. Marlo is still dead, Phil the cat still purrs for Old Forester bourbon, and Mack still watches himself from above. But nothing else is as it seems. Mystery nests within mystery. Villainy secrets itself, burrowed within the corrupted hollows of polite society, biding its time. Pressing questions about the mayor and a pick-pocket prostitute on the run from the mob must go unanswered as Raymond Mackey is sidelined in a new job. On the upside, the Chandler Illinois Police Department pays him enough to help take the retirement squeeze off the booze and cigarettes. The downside is the department rule against smoking and drinking. That, and everybody with a badge hates Mack as much as ever.A welcome diversion shows up in the form of Nadia King, an alluring single mother who asks Mack for some off-the-books help recovering a missing heirloom. The hand-carved Russian nesting doll is one hundred seventy-four years old. Open her up and she's full of secrets. But first he has to find her. Then he has to stay alive long enough to understand that smile on her face.Mack's road to enlightenment is fraught with danger and littered with cautionary tales. A casino manager brutally beaten into the afterlife by his own employees. A decorated cop shot to death in his mother's home as she listens, bound and gagged, from the kitchen. A dope dealer on trial for allegedly murdering a successful restauranteur in a robbery gone bad. A criminal defense lawyer with pointy boots, a ponytail, and a bottomless retainer. An ex-felon pornographer accusing a cop of running a protection racket. A quiet girl in a yellow coat who knows too much for her own good. And a giant, brick building of a guy named Hell with a broken poker chip in his pocket and Mack on his mind. It doesn't help that trust is in such short supply, or that Big Man is watching him from every corner of the city. Marlo is dead and gone. The only one who can watch over Mack? is Mack.… (meer)

During the first 150 pages of this book I struggled to continue reading, then it got exciting and I couldn't stop reading, it got that exciting. That is why I recommend this book. The main character thinks a number of times that he has found the right solution, but then it always turns out that he is wrong. The story is very complicated. There are also parts from a book that is still being written by the main character, a kind of second part of the main character, who provides commentary and a very colorful use of language, to make it all even more difficult. I got this book for free to write a review about it. ( )

I am ambivalent about this book! It revolves around Raymond (Ray) Mackey, a police officer who has just been reinstated, however, he was not returned to his beloved homicide team, instead he is now in Internal Affairs. Ray tends to do what he wants to rather than the tasks his Lieutenant directs him to do. He is also asked to try and track down a Russian Doll that went into police evidence when a policeman was killed, and his family is trying to get it back as it is now missing. The woman asking for it back was in a relationship with Ray’s brother in law, which is why he is prepared to look into it on top of his usual duties. Ray locates the Russian Doll quite quickly, and the takes off, with various twists and turns, dead bodies, and lots of questions about potential police corruption. There are also a lot of constants - Ray’s dead wife Marlo, his smoking (chain, Camels), and his cat, Phil, and Ray’s seeming inability to follow orders! Some of the constancy is overused - they become cliches before the end of the book, which I don’t think the author was aiming to do. There is a lot of detail, and everything seems to move extremely slowly as we wade through all the detail. For me, I did find the pace slow (normally I enjoy a lot of detail and a nice twisty complex plot) but this seemed turgid. The other aspect of the book that I never got used to was the changing point of view. There is a constant switch between the first and third person for the narrative, presumably to represent Ray’s way of being, as he has Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder. For this was not successful, as I had to consciously register that Ray was always the protagonist. Overall, a fairly interesting, if cumbersome read, which did not entice me to go back and read the first book in the series, nor will I be reading the next one - if there is one!

We find Mack has gotten a second chance or a second sentence. He has his badge back, but it’s not all warm and fuzzy. Nope, not by a long-shot. As if his fall from grace weren’t enough, he’s now IAD. Which means that everyone hates him for the right and the wrong reasons. Sometimes Mack can’t win for losing, which he would say is the story of his life.

As the title implies, most of the action centers around a matryoshka doll and a couple living breathing dolls as well. And while both the matryoshka and Nadia, can put a smile on Mack’s face, they also put a whole lotta hurt on it as well.

The Windy City never seems to let the dirt blow away and Mack is so deep in the muck and mire it’s over his head. Everyone seems to have some angle and trust, well, that seems more like a curse than something you can count on. Just like a dog with a bone though Mack can’t stop until he has it all sorted out. He’s just wondering how many friends it will cost him this time, cause he doesn’t have any to spare.

My whole review can be read on Random Thought Online Magazine.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. ( )
