This is not at all the same story as Legends and Lattes, except in all the best ways. An elven mage retires, moves to a new city (for warmth, mostly, to deal with the aftereffects of his magic), and sort of accidentally opens a tavern. He makes various friends, slowly reveals some of his secrets (we the readers know them, but he's worried about his friends' reactions to some of them), settles in to his new life - then there's a crisis that forces him to exert his magic again. And a happy ending, on many, many levels. If you like cocktails, there's an extra layer of fun - they're concocting some really interesting stuff (I can't drink - allergic to alcohol - so it's pretty abstract to me). I read this because I'd gotten S.L. Rowland mixed up with another author; now I have _another_ new author to binge on. This is the first book I’ve read by the author. It’s a nice quick read with an uncomplicated plot and plenty of cosy vibes (leaving aside any questions about exactly what *defines* cosy fantasy). I note the book has an LGBTQ+ tag. It’s not a romance, more that it contains a bit of flirtation—which is absolutely fine by me—I’ve noted previously that I’m not a romance reader at all! Overall, a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)Tales of Aedrea (1)
"After twenty years defending the frozen north against some of the most dangerous threats in the nine kingdoms, Rhoren "Bloodbane" has finally earned his retirement. While the blood mage's service to the realm may have ended, burning veins and aching joints remain, and Rhoren soon learns that a warmer climate offers relief from his chronic pain. And a chance at a fresh start. In the warm and relaxing atmosphere of Eastborne, the umbral elf finds a new purpose and a sense of belonging. He may have left the frozen north behind, but he brings with him the skills and strength gained from a lifetime of defending the realm. Along with his most prized possession -- a book of drink recipes inherited from his father. Spilled cocktails may not carry the same weight as spilled blood, but opening a tavern brings a unique brand of challenges. With the right friends and a little bit of luck, he might just have a recipe for success" -- Back cover. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

This book has almost no conflict. It was comforting to read but never kept me awake past bedtime. Also, I’m unsure how to describe the book’s main relationship. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that I read the characters as good friends but questioned that at the end, and was left wondering if they are perhaps aro/ace, or if the intent was that their relationship grows after the book ends.
