This was so good, a romance that had my heart in its clutches. I couldn't get enough and at times found myself at the edge of my seat. It was well written and kept me engaged.

Exciting, beguiling, amusing and stunning, “Captive of the Stolen Empire” tells the story of Ilya Valerious, heir to city Sorrena – now conquered by Emperor Ryszard’s army led by his first-in-command captain Lucien, a masked man possessing dark magic.

Being a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope and of both medieval and fantasy novels, I was immediately drawn to this story. This is the first book I have read by Megan Van Dyke and I am glad I encountered this as it is an incredible introduction to her work. With perfect pacing, an ideal story length, good characterisation and description, I was engrossed in reading this I couldn’t put it down! Megan was able to set the scene, detail fictional locations, provide lore and make it all fairly straightforward to follow. I will need to check her other novels out – posthaste!

This is interestingly told from a dual point of view from both Ilya and Lucien. Ilya and Lucien are very well written, I absolutely adore them! I love the banter they have both witty and deep, and how protective he is of her. The other characters all contribute nicely to the plot and served a purpose – none of them were unnecessary. (

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and the style of writing pulled me right into the thick of things. The story was interesting, and elements of the story were unique. Some of the story line felt a little predictable but I really enjoyed the characters as they felt real and nuanced which is something I find lacking in so many books. Van Dyke wove magic and politics together in a way that felt natural to the story as well.

A really great (literal) enemies to lovers fantasy romance! Ilya is born to rule Soren’s like her mother before her until the Emperor conquers their land. Ilya is held captive by the Emperor’s First Captain, Lucien, to ensure the people’s cooperation. The amount of secrets uncovered and twists and turns make the plot line surge and keeps you on the edge of your seat! I love the world building and character development. The duel POV really helps to empathize and dig deeper into the main character’s and their motivation. The chemistry is great between Ilya and Lucien! The relationship develops relatively quickly but they are strong leads and good partners. I loved this story and the twists towards the end were ones I didn’t see coming! If you are fan of The Bridge Kingdom I think you would enjoy this too. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. (

This is the kind of dark, dystopian fantasy I could read all the time. Ilya is smart, tough, but also vulnerable. When the evil emperor captures her city state, she's taken from her palace as a 'guest', but is really a hostage to force her mother the queen, to toe the line.
At first she focuses all her rage at Lucien, one of the mad emperor's captains, but he has his own inner demons and the longer they're together, the stronger their attraction becomes. There's evil, cruelty, treachery, bravery and romance, all mixed so very well. (
