The story is finally gaining traction and Shen Qiao is now acting more than reacting to the events in the story. The relationship between Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi is finally getting somewhere too. At the same time, it feels that the author’s attention to detail is flagging. They could start the scene by saying it was heavy with rain, but forget that detail by the end of the chapter and say it was a hot sweltering day. Fight scenes make less sense (and I’m not sure whether this is bad translation or due to the original text), characters would be described as making a move but then end up elsewhere without explanation. There was actually a fight scene in chapter 78 where the description stops halfway through an enemy’s move and then in the next paragraph Shen Qiao is running through a forest and has been for a while. You then find out through a conversation between Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi that a fourth person (you’ve never heard of before) had entered the fight which forced Shen Qiao to flee. It had all the feeling of the author writing themselves into a corner with the fight and decided to give up halfway through. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"HE DOESN'T DESERVE TO DIE HERE, NOT LIKE THIS." Despite the sting of Yan Wushi's betrayal fresh on his heart, Shen Qiao rushes to save him from certain death only to arrive a moment too late--or so it seems. As rumor of Yan Wushi's demise spreads far and wide, the winds of change stir across the land. Meanwhile, Shen Qiao seeks to heal Yan Wushi's grave injuries, and realizes that his understanding of the Demon Lord runs only skin-deep. Yet fate does not allow the pair to remain idle for long. When an old friend reveals his true nature, Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi have no choice but to aid him on a perilous mission. Only this time, humans aren't the only monsters to fear. I'd have finished this faster if the past few months weren't a mess, and it has nothing to do with the book's quality. Some of the heavier worldbuilding is in this entry, so it did slow me down a little, but it's still a wonderful book with lots of fun Yanshen moments.
If you like historical fantasy, this is a great series to give a shot, particularly since the translation will be complete by year's end. Looking forward to volume 4! ( )
