Divided into two parts, the first is dedicated to the roots and current issues of Brazilian landscaping and its areas of influence, and the second to the paths towards sustainable landscaping. What can be sustainable landscaping in Brazil? What is really important in our environmental reality? With accessible language and based on science and practice, this book seeks to understand the past and the present and to think about the future, seeking paths to these answers. Written over seven years, it is a work for professionals, amateurs and those interested in the subject. In landscaping, sustainability is a multidisciplinary theme and addresses the multifunctionality of the landscape, covering, among many others, environmental, social and economic aspects, within restorative, preservationist strategies and responsible for benefits to the environment and to society, something that does not rule out but goes far beyond the traditional aesthetic objective. Sustainable landscaping emerges as an important tool for education, public health and reconnection with nature, also contributing to resilience in the face of climate change. Designing the contemporary landscape is no longer just about people. The native fauna and flora, the respect and consideration for the natural landscape that preceded us in the territory, and the understanding that native nature is not a deformation to be corrected, a degenerated space to be converted? as in the Keith Thomas' words. At the same time, vegetation in landscaping can no longer be understood as a simple architectural or constructive element, subject to fads disconnected from values ??other than decoration. Sustainable landscaping is timeless and dynamic because it is grounded in science. Native plants are timeless, because they represent the original natural and cultural identity of a territory. Among the relevant points for sustainable landscaping in Brazil, we can highlight two: attention to cities and their areas of influence due to the intense urbanization achieved in recent decades, with a significant part of the population living in urban areas, and our heritage of the national territory of greater native biodiversity of the planet, a unique natural heritage in terms of complexity of landscapes and abundance of species of fauna and flora. Added to this is the fact that the preservation and restoration of native biodiversity is currently a global priority for the world's largest economies. Given this scenario, for Brazilian sustainable landscaping and its different attributions, we believe that native biodiversity should be a starting point and a north, enhancing other themes such as cultural appreciation and protection of natural remnants by the population, the potential for ecosystem services, the preservation and restoration of soil and water resources. This book seeks a possible path of harmony between humanity and inherited native nature, which requires rethinking green areas under the influence of human occupations. It was developed over more than seven years of theoretical, field research and applications in landscaping projects and implementations of different scales and complexities in various Brazilian regions, mainly based on the author's experience at the head of Cardim Arquitetura Paisagi?stica.
