Conceptually intriguing but there's no unifying element or plot to seal my interest. Artwork is nice enough. ( )

This wordless picture book tells it's story in a similar way in which Banyai typically tells his stories. Banyai has a reoccurring theme of presenting an image, and then making the image that follows give more context to the one before it. In this book, each page shows a particular image that is set in grey and neutral tones. The main object of focus is colored in red, which stands out on the neutrally toned page. Each subject in red is usually looking or interacting with something that is out of sight. So then the next page shows a better point of view from the character/subject in order to reveal what was hidden on the page before. In other words, it shows you "the other side" of the image/world, hence the name. The way in which Banyai plays with perspective is wonderful! He does such a good job of attracting the readers attention to specific details in order to connect two separate ideas. I also loved the drawing of settings in this book. The book takes place in many different places that venture outside of reality into an imaginary/surreal world that pushes the reader to think more openly about the plot. I also loved the broad message in this book. This book suggests that their is always another side to consider for everything. This very realistic perspective of life is given to us in a fun and creative world that Banyai imagines for us. ( )

Ever wonder what's on the other side of the door, outside your city, or even the other side of the world? The other side is an illustration book created by an Hungarian artist name Istvan Banyai. It is one of the most unique picture book I've read so far. He's so creative with his illustrations which show us the different perspective in things. It make you want to look beyond what u can see and be more aware of the things around you. He take you up close and personal with an image and then far away, then up and down, and finally front and back. This book teaches kids to look outside the box. It encourages them to be curious and keep an open mind to the world around them. ( )

As the title suggests, The Other Side provokes its readers into considering and pondering what is on the other side of the page of a book, their window, the ocean, the bars of a tiger's cage, the curtain, the corner, the world and so on. Each page is an illustration of place perhaps most readers have seen or experienced. But turning the page offers the flip-side of the story. A fantastic and thought provoking example of story telling without a single word. ( )

Quirky characters repeatedly find themselves in increadingly surreal settings in this provocative wordless narrative. ( )
