Opmerkelijk niveau : laatste schittering voor de echte Middeleeuwen. Vooral boek 1 en 2 zijn mooi, als pareltjes uit de troostliteratuur. De volgende boeken zijn zwaarder op de hand. De theologisch-filosofische redeneringen zijn ronduit zwak : noch de plaats van het kwaad, noch het bestaan van de vrije wil worden deugdelijk uiteengezet. ( )
Boëthius was een romeinse filosoof, schrijver en politicus die omstreeks 500 na Christus leefde. Dit boek is waarschijnlijk in de gevangenis geschreven, voordat hij werd terechtgesteld wegens vermeende samenspanning met het Byzantijnse rijk. Het is een discussie met zijn raadsvrouw Philosophia over levensvragen als geluk, voorzienigheid en vrije wil. Hij beklaagt zich dat Fortuna hem afneemt wat voordien geschonken is, maar vrouw Philosophia zegt dat hem wordt afgenomen wat nooit van hem geweest is. Hij accepteert zijn lot en is dankbaar voor wat geweest is. ( )
