This book is intended as an introduction to the current concepts, applications and tools of information technology. It is for the non-specialist in the field and does not assume a familiarity with the underlying mathematical and engineering ideas. The book is organized into two main parts; these are graded in their level of technical detail. In part 1, chapter 1 is about some of the fundamental concepts of information technology, in particular about information itself, chapter 2 is about the applications of this new technology in many areas of industry, commerce, education and training, leisure, medical and welfare. Established applications are clearly distinguished from those which, though technically feasible now, are possibilities for the future.
