Collected for the first time here are the best of King's early Gasoline Alley Sunday comics, starting from the very first Sunday in 1921, reprinted in the original size and colors. King's innovations in art, layout and storytelling brought a new warmth and style to the medium at the dawn of the Golden Age of newspaper comic strips. If you are interested in the development of this unique American art form, or simply love beautiful comics, this sumptuous volume is a masterpiece in comic art, and a must for your collection. Like McCay, Feininger, Herriman, and others of that era, King was a graphic innovator. His panoramic layouts, themed styling, and whimsical cartoon conceits explored new artistic methods. But he also had a great knowledge of story and character, presented with a warmth and humanity never seen before in comics, and rarely done as well since. He went beyond the gags and slapstick of his contemporaries to create vignettes of genuinely human characters; showing them relating to each other and, particularly in his Sunday comics, to the world around them.… (meer)

There may be a few comic strips with more artistic and creative merit than Frank King's "Gasoline Alley", but I can't think of any I hold more dear to my heart. It's no small joy to me that the complete series has been in reprint for a few years now, and now this marvelous oversized collection of Sunday pages nearly completes my wish list for this strip. These are a selection of Sunday pages (when they took up an entire page) from 1921 to 1934. We get to see Walt and Skeezix from the time he was left on Walt's doorstep as a baby, to young adolescence. In his prime, King took full advantage of the open space available to him, and some of his Sunday strips are the equal of anything Winsor McCay created in his "Little Nemo in Slumberland" pages. In addition, we have the homey charm and simple pleasures in life that permeate "Gasoline Alley".

My only quibbles would be that the introductory articles in this book, as in the daily strip reprints, are STILL fonted way too tiny for older eyes - and in such a huge book! The other is that I would have been glad to see a complete reprinting of the Sunday pages, rather than a relatively small selection. And finally, I assume that some contractural minutiae prevents the publishers from using the title "Gasoline Alley" in this book or the wonderful daily reprint books. But in such a massive undertaking that gets most aspects down perfect, it seems a little petty and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. But these feel like ungrateful kvetching after the sheer pleasure this book has given me. Another of the Sunday Press full-size reprints of classic color Sunday pages from the golden age of the comic strip. Like the two that reprint "Little Nemo" Sunday pages, this volume is enormous and stunning. ( )

Very large sized book with the best sunday pages of the popular comic strip Walt & Skeezix. In the same series as the evenly fantastic Little Nemo book. ( )
