I would include it in my classroom library from grades k-2. In "How to Make a Mud Pie", a boy and his sister tell the reader the directions to make a mud pie, at the end of the story the two children try to serve the dish to their parents. This book has a silly premise and incorporates games that children may play outside in order to teach the concept of directions to make recipes. I would incorporate this book in a lesson that centralizes around directions. This book is for emerging readers. The text is simple yet has words that we don’t use in our everyday vocabulary like “gooey”. Students will have to sound letters out and blend them together when they do not recognize a word. Students may also use a filler word and read the rest of the sentence using their context clues. How to make a mud Pie is a silly book that shows how children play and try to show their appreciation for their parents. This may spark an idea for children to go explore the out doors and drop the phones. How to Make a Mud Pie is a guided reading book about two kids doing a step by step procedure to make a mud pie. I give this book a 5/5 because children are able to relate to the messiness and mischievous behavior of the two kids. The two kids are spending their playtime outside making mud pies, causing them to get all dirty and covered with dirt. Most children tend to like getting dirty and messy when they are playing. Being able to relate to the type of play that the two kids in the book are doing allows the reader to be more engaged when reading the book, thus grasping a better understanding of the text’s meaning. Additionally, with each step there are illustrations that shows a visual representation of the steps. Visuals that describe the text can be helpful for ELL students because they are able to use the picture as a guide when trying to comprehend the meaning of the text. Connecting the picture to the text allows ELL students to better comprehend what is occurring in the text. How to make a mud pie is a great guided reading book. The pictures allow students who are not fluent in English follow along in the story so that they still have an idea of what is going on. This also makes the book perfect for a picture walk to do with younger students. This book can be used as a science talk by talking about the cause and effect of making mud and the events or followed as a story. Since there is a small amount of text on each page it also makes it perfect for students who are still working on their English or read alouds. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
