"Talking to Angels" by Esther Watson explores the relationship between a girl and her sister with autism. Though her sister has autism they have a very typical sibling relationship. I enjoyed the child like illustrations and description of their relationship. I also liked how the disability that her sister had wasn't ( ) I was so pleased to learn about this powerful book during an in class reading. The illustrations are unique, but help explore the warm and boundless love that can be between siblings, no matter their differences. We learn that the narrator has an autistic sibling and works hard to understand their needs and experiences. It was a wonderful book with empathy in action, teaching and simplifying something that can often be made more complicated. We learn from people we love and reading can introduce new people and characters to that list. Her sister's disability just is and does not define their relationship. What I enjoyed most about this book was that the pictures were through the girl with autism. As the older sibling tells about her sister, she portrays her in a positive light and never makes autism seem negative or like a disability. This is a simple and easy book but I think it's a good book to show children to open up conversations to autism and other disabilities. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
