PREFACE TO THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION
Like my commentary on the Books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, which appeared three years ago, the present treatment of the Books of Samuel is concerned to examine and expound the material not only with regard to its individual fetails, but also with regard to its place within the whole book, and, where possible, with regard to its place within Holy Scripture.
PREFACE TO THE ENGLISH EDITION
It is with great satisfaction that I greet the appearance of the English translation of the Commentary on the Books of Samuel in the German Altes Testament Deutsch series.
INTRODUCTION
The books of Samuel contain that part of the history of Israel which describes the foundation of the State, running from the close of the period of the Judges to the establishment of the united kingdom.
