The three laws of Robotics: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm 2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future--a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete. Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world--all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov's trademark.
Fun! It had been a while since I read SF. Nine puzzles and a finale. the stories are chronological in each subsequent story the robot technology is advanced. In each story robot psychologist tells A problem arising from a robot, from story three she had to solve. those problems become more and more abstract. Is there in the first story and child who loses that parents because a robot is an attraction in a mall, in the ninth story robots are the possessors of the means of production on earth,
The last story is only in this issue and was written with the help of a computer.which knows 10,000 books including Asimov's. That story had a message but not all the sentences and the order made sense.
Fun:
- simple science is just mentioned and used.
- you can puzzle along
- A retrospective: you see a future imagined in 1950 up to about 2050, where robots will play an increasingly larger role, which possibilities Asimov saw: it is funny that some things like video calling have become reality and now in the 20twenties people really believe that on other planets people can live. I don't know how the 'machines' in story 9 are presented but for the rest robots remain metal humanoids. A lot of technology that we now take for granted does not appear in the book, e.g. that robots are made of plastic and can take all kinds of shapes. There is no mention of a personal computer or the Internet.
And the other way around, there will still be smoking in public places everywhere in 2030, now unimaginable. and the world's population has in reality grown faster, or it must unexpectedly decrease significantly in the next 30 years.
