Unlike her father, Henry VIII, and sister. Elizabeth I. Mary Tudor took no particular pride in being English. She restored the church which her brother had destroyed and the Papal jurisdiction which her father had excluded. But most important her support of the Emperor Charles V led her to marry his son. Philip of Spain. This marriage was bitterly opposed in France. The plot led by Wyatt was detected and the rebellion in favour of Elizabeth, was subdued. But resetment was not subdued in fact it was increased by Philip's plans to increase his power. The plot led by Henry Dudley was squashed at an early stage: Mary survived and Philip diverted his interest elsewhere. This book is a detailed examination of the opposition to Mary and an important step in the scholarly revision of the reputation. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
