When Quinn Harlowe's friend is found dead from a suspicious accident, Quinn becomes more than curious about the new high-security compound that has popped up next door. Quinn, however, is not the only one curious, so is undercover agent Huck McCabe. Quinn's meddling is getting Huck in hot water with the boss's of the compound, so he starts to follow her and gets more than he bargained for at the end of his mission.

This was a fast and easy read. I enjoyed it enough the first time, but would probably never reread it. I would however, like to read more by Carla Neggers.

An idyllic cottage. An unlikely suicide. A conspiracy out to blow the lid off the Dept. of Justice.

Three months ago Quinn Harlowe left the high-pressure hallways of the Justice Dept. to become an independent consultant and have more control over her life - maybe even have a life. But the nirvana of her new gig is short-lived when Quinn discovers her friend and former colleague Alicia Miller dead outside Quinn's bayside cottage. Suicide? Quinn is doubtful.

Investigating on her own, she soon discovers that someone is following her every move. Huck McCabe claims he's a bodyguard at Breakwater, a high-security compound near Quinn's cottage. But Quinn suspects he's lying, never imagining the truth: McCabe is an undercover agent trying to penetrate a violent network of vigilantes - the same people Quinn has identified. Joined by a common goal, Quinn and McCabe must take on the fight of their lives...a fight they know could lead to disaster.

Easy fast read. This is the second Carla Neggers book I've read. Ex-Justice Dept investigator lends her waterfront house to a friend who dies in boating accident and she investigates. Falls in love with an undercover Justice worker while discovering a group of vigillantes. ( )

An idyllic cottage. An unlikely suicide. A conspiracy that could blow the lid off the Department of Justice.

Three months ago Quinn Harlowe left the high-pressure hallways of the Justice Department to become an independent consultant and have more control over her life -- maybe even have a life. But the nirvana of her new gig is short-lived when Quinn discovers her friend and former colleague Alicia Morrow dead outside Quinn's bayside cottage. Suicide? Quinn is doubtful.

Investigating on her own, she soon discovers that someone is following her every move. Huck McCabe claims he's a bodyguard at Breakwater, a high-security compound near Quinn's cottage. But Quinn suspects he's lying, never imagining the truth: McCabe is an undercover agent trying to penetrate a violent network of vigilantes -- the same people Quinn has identified. Joined by a common goal, Quinn and McCabe must fight the bastion of law and order . . . a fight they know could lead to disaster.
