I bought this book because I wanted to know a lot more about the Borghese works of art, and because I wanted to be able to remember all the beautiful things there. Overall, I was pleased with it, but two negative things pushed my rating down to a four: 1. descriptions of every painting dwelt more on a detailed description of the painting or sculpture (ie, things I could see with my own eyes by looking at the picture) and less on an explanation of what these things might mean (ie, I would rather have read: "the support for the sculpture is in the shape of a tree, because of the large bulk of marble necessary to support the weight of the upper torso," whereas the book would have stopped before the word "because.") 2. On some of the finer sculptural works, especially the Bernini's, which are SO dynamic, I would have LOVED if the book included photographs from more than one angle. Still, a lovely book, and it's SO nice to find a small gallery that forbids photography have a work complete enough to remind me of all the beautiful things that I saw there! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
A room-by-room guide to the Casina Borghese. Created in the 17th century as a showcase for classical antiquities, this museum also boasts exquisitely painted interiors & a series of sculptures, many by Bernini & many still in the actual places for which they were intended.
