On her way to the annual Halloween Witches' Wobble in this entertaining holiday story, one kindhearted witch finds herself chauffeuring an ever-growing crowd of passengers. From a hungry skeleton to a frightened ghost, a lonely black cat to a shaking mummy, all plead to be taken on to the witch's broom. There's only so much a broom can carry, however, and the magical conveyance breaks in mid-flight, leaving its erstwhile occupants to struggle on to the shindig on their own. Arriving late, they discover that all the goodies have been gulped down already by the greedy goblins! Is Halloween ruined... or is there something else this spooky crew can do?

With rhyming text and humorous illustrations, Halloween Sky Ride makes for an engaging holiday title. The first half of the story, in which a series of passengers embark on the witch's broom, put me strongly in mind of similar tales to be found in Room on the Broom and Fright Night Flight, although the second half of the story took off in a different direction. I don't know that this is destined to become a particular Halloween favorite for me - I have read quite a few such titles, as part of my 'witchy-witches' project - but it is still solidly appealing. Recommended to young readers looking for witchy Halloween fare. ( )
