The rating of 1/5 is based on the fact that although poor in terms of more recently
published books, it is (I think) the first book in English on Shogi, published originally
in 1966. It is therefore of historical interest. It's interesting to have a 'real' copy of this
book rather than a photocopy!
Poor. The main problems I have with this book are that the notation is different from
that in most subsequent shogi books in English. The notation system is almost unusable
The pieces are represented with an irritating International chess
equivalent logo surrounding the Japanese Kanji. The promoted
pieces are represented by a red circle around the symbol of the
unpromoted piece, rather than using the actual Japanese symbol
for the promoted piece. This makes the diagrams extremely difficult
to interpret. There are also mistakes in the 'rules' and I have detected
at least one typo.
