Those familiar with Duane, who originally showed up in "Texasville" will find this story a bit sad though quirky in typical McMurtry style. And while I'd love to say its on par with others he's written, it's not. Having read many of his books, I find similar personalities and life views of his characters especially with the males. It would be easy to interchange Duane with Gus from "Lonesome Dove" or Jack from "Cadillac Jack". Regardless while pleasant, this story pales in comparison to Terms of Endearment or Dove. It's 'light reading', has a few chuckles but its not Larry's best work. ( )

Of the five in the “Duane Moore series” — Last Picture, Texasville, Duane’s Depressed, When the Light Goes and this one — Rhino Ranch is clearly the weakest, sloppy in editing and proofing and aimless. It reminded me of a TV sitcom that is good in spots, but can’t sustain its quality for an entire season. In a way, I guess, the entire series is like a 5-season sitcom, with each season after Texasville unable to capture the best of the first two books.

I forgive McMurtry for almost anything, however ... even this. ( )

This is the first McMurty book I've read. It is: easy to read, has lots and lots of short chapters, has decent character development, and kind of a sad story.

One comment, McMurty uses an odd method of writing dialog that I found disconcerting; he would right a line of dialog for a character and then continue with the character talking in the next sentence. It was jarring enough that I had to re-read several times as I kept losing the thread of who was speaking. ( )

I came to McMurtry’s latest novel about Duane, Rhino Ranch, more or less fresh, as if I were meeting him for the first time. And I liked the old guy. In fact, I liked Duane a lot. He and his friends in the fictional Texas town of Thalia made me laugh and nearly made me cry, and they made me think about life, which isn’t a bad trick for a retired oilman who feels increasingly insignificant and engages in a dubious coupling with a teenage porn star. For more on that, you’ll have to read the book.
