This large-format visual dictionary introduces children to over 1000 words and concepts. Clear, colorful photographs and illustrations depict each word and are arranged into groups by subject such as the human body, animals, food, actions, colors, letters, and various kinds of objects. Young children will enjoy recognizing their favorite things and learning to identify less familiar objects. This book can also be used as a resource for teaching early literacy and word recognition as well a point of reference for connecting with young English language learners. Highly recommended for libraries which serve children ages 2-6. ( ) From the large-format series that includes My First Cookbook and My First Nature Book , here's an attractive picture dictionary for young children. Organized to align with a toddler's outward-bound consciousness, the book begins with self and moves gradually into a broader context. The double-page spreads "All about Me" and "My Clothes" begin the book, but later subjects include "At the Supermarket" and "Going to School," and, finally, concepts, such as "Colors, Shapes, and Numbers" and "Opposites," are introduced. Clear, readable lettering labels the objects. The full-color artwork includes some paintings alongside the many photographs, but with many small pictures on each bright white page, the juxtaposition of media works surprisingly well. A good choice for children learning to talk, with secondary uses for children learning to read or studying English as a second language.
