The Little Blue Truck Leads the Way by Alice Schertle is a great book for children. The book starts off with an old farm truck who has to make a delivery in the city. The little blue truck is mesmerized by all the lights and cars in the city. Little Blue drives slow and steady and begins to realize that everyone is in a hurry and has no patience. To no surprise the busy, rushing trucks get in a traffic jam and collision. It is now up to Little Blue to save the day. He goes to teach the other cars that kindness and taking turns is the way to be.
Personal Reaction:
I believe this book contained an important message of kindness and manners. The illustrations help to tell and bring the story to life. This book even helped my niece to understand the need for taking turns. This book also is a very basic approach to dealing with bullies and tolerance of others who are different. Though it is not the main focus of the book, the idea could be expanded upon.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. The teacher can have the children decorate their own Little blue truck to best represent them.
2. The teacher could teach a lesson over manners and then have the children explain why taking turns and being polite madders.
3. The teacher could design a mock traffic jam using two cardboard box cars and practice using direction words such as “left, right, go, stop.”
