An exceptional work that proves historical novels set in Tudor England can be superb literary fiction. Among the many novels set during the reign of Henry VIII, and there are many good ones, this stands apart in portraying the human complexity of the people and politics of that time. Mantel's genius lies partly in picking one of the most unsympathetic figures of the time, Henry VIII's enforcer, Thomas Cromwell, and making readers sympathize with a man who could be as kind as he was ruthless. After reading this, one can never watch that old, lauded chestnut A Man for All Seasons the same way again.

I have to echo several of the comments about the authors style of writing dialogue...which was very frustrating at times. Specifically it's difficult to always know who's talking. With that said - I thought it was a very interesting book about a fascinating character in Thomas Cromwell and worthy of a booker prize. Cromwell was someone who King Henry relied on greatly for advice and basically getting things done. He was born poor, ran away from home as a youngster, yet rose to become somewhat of a genius. The author takes you on a journey during the period where King Henry is trying to get the Pope to annul his marriage with wife #1 so he can marry Anne. Cromwell is a protestant - though no one really knows this - and is determined to take part in leading England into the reformation period. ( )

Beautifully written evocation of the time, from just before Woolsey's death to just after Ann loses her head. A different view of Thomas Cromwell as both hero and survivor, and of Thomas More as narrow-minded.

Winner of the Booker Prize. This is a retelling of Tudor history from the viewpoint of Thomas Cromwell. Thomas comes across as a thoughtful, intelligent man. Loyal to Wolsey and to Henry but always careful to protect his own viewpoint. ( )

Wow. Hilary Mantel has an amazing writing voice.

A story from the perspective of the great organizer, Thomas Cromwell, might seem dry, but this book kept me awake at night reading. ( )

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0805080686, Hardcover)

Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: No character in the canon has been writ larger than Henry VIII, but that didn't stop Hilary Mantel. She strides through centuries, past acres of novels, histories, biographies, and plays--even past Henry himself--confident in the knowledge that to recast history's most mercurial sovereign, it's not the King she needs to see, but one of the King's most mysterious agents. Enter Thomas Cromwell, a self-made man and remarkable polymath who ascends to the King's right hand. Rigorously pragmatic and forward-thinking, Cromwell has little interest in what motivates his Majesty, and although he makes way for Henry's marriage to the infamous Anne Boleyn, it's the future of a free England that he honors above all else and hopes to secure. Mantel plots with a sleight of hand, making full use of her masterful grasp on the facts without weighing down her prose. The opening cast of characters and family trees may give initial pause to some readers, but persevere: the witty, whip-smart lines volleying the action forward may convince you a short stay in the Tower of London might not be so bad... provided you could bring a copy of Wolf Hall along. --Anne Bartholomew
