"Meet Kit," tells the story of young Kit Kitteredge, an aspiring journalist and her life during the Great Depression. As her father loses his job at the car dealership, Kit's family has to change their lifestyle to lower their expenses. At first, Kit is not happy to make these big changes, such as letting people rent rooms in their home. As the story moves along, she realizes the importance of being thankful for the things you have. This story is a great introduction to the financial hardships that people faced during the Great Depression. This historical fiction story explores the theme of perseverance through difficult times. ( ) This book was really good, the main message of perseverance being able to get you through anything was present throughout the entire text. The story itself was written in such a way that the emotions of the family were incredibly present and powerful. The characters themselves were given such a depth that it never once crossed my mind that they were fictional characters until I remembered what I was reading. Kit was the perfect mix of an innocent child who didn't understand what the Great Depression was going to cause and a driven woman who was determined to help her family in this finical situation. Meet Kit tells the story of Kit, an elementary school aspiring writer growing up during the Great depression. In this story we meet Kit and her family, a middle class family whose dad work at a car dealership in the suburbs of Cincinnati. One day, Kit discovers that her father has lost his job, and her family must take in boarders to help subsidize the family’s expenses. At first, Kit is not too fond of her new lifestyle and hone life, but in time she learns that not only could t be worse, but that there are also a lot of positives to living on a tighter budget and in a home with a bunch of new and interesting people. Personally, I felt this book did an excellent job of introducing young children to the topic of the Great Depression, while still making it an uplifting story. The story shows how strength, perseverance and love can get people through a less than ideal situation, which I believe is a good lesson for children to learn. The book also included several pictures throughout that I felt went along well with the book without turning the book into something for lower ages. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
