Two novellas here. 2-1/2 stars for the first one and 4-1/2 for the second. Both of the stories were about female shifters (sisters) who are discovered by and fall in love with non shifter men. The shifter world is a bit different in that the type of animal you can shift into is determined by the Great Spirit while you are in the womb. So shifting is more a magical thing. Shifters are few and far between and are not an organized society.

The first novella was Golden Eyes Aliyah, a cheetah, has just escaped after having been capture by bad men who use exotic animals to stage illegal hunts. Duncan is the sheriff of the Colorado town nearby. He rescues what he thinks is an injured cheetah and gets a woman instead. They spend the book having sex and shutting down the bad guys' operation. The book is nice but kind of average. The sex scenes were very explicit, too racy in my opinion for where they were in their relationship. I don't really mind anal scenes if they're done right but not the second time you make love with a stranger on the second day you know him. Am I being bad by saying that this sort of thing says something about our heroine that sort of at least whispers of, oh I don't know, the S word maybe? Perhaps farther along in a relationship where it could illustrate trust would be better perhaps? So quick story with too quick emotional growth.

Second novella Amber Eyes is much better IMO. It is the story of Kaya, Aliyah's sister who was captured and taken away from her family when she was 4 as the captors thought she was an out of place cougar. She escapes in Colorado and has spent the last 20 years living mostly as a cougar in the mountains. She hangs around the cabin where Hunter and Jericho live between mercenary type jobs. She approaches them as a cougar when she's injured but changes into a woman after night in order to get food from their kitchen. They find her but don't realize she is the cougar. She is in and out of their cabin both as a cougar and a naked woman for a while before they figure it out. The author did a good job here showing her as a person who didn't really understand the human world and showing the confusion of the men as they dealt with this woman running around in the winter in the Colorado mountains naked. This was one of the better menages that I've read. The men had shared a woman before but that situation had not gone well and they were reluctant to do it again. Kaya, however, was so unused to human mores that she felt that having 2 mates to look out for her would be a fine thing and she felt no shame or what have you about it. Plus the issue of how others might feel about it was addressed. Also while the sex was certainly there, it was much more sweet and emotional than the first novella. The guys were very aware of how innocent she was and treated her with kid gloves. Lovely story. ( )
