Chester Aaron was a prolific American author for both children and adults, and wrote novels, stories, and memoirs. Born in 1923 in the coal-mining town of Butler, Pennsylvania, he was educated at Butler Senior High School, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and San Francisco State University. He saw combat in World War II, and was with the troops that liberated Dachau. Following publication of his first novel in 1967, he was an x-ray technician at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, CA. He joined the faculty at Saint Mary’s College, retiring as a full professor in 1997. For twenty-five years he cultivated ninety varieties of exotic garlic on his farm in Sonoma County, becoming a world-renowned expert, and publishing a number of books on the subject. He died in 2019.

It’s no secret that Willa Thornton hopes to own a bloodhound someday. Her parents sign a contract that promises Willa a bloodhound puppy for her fourteenth birthday if she gets serious about school and starts getting good grades. With this motivation, Willa begins paying more attention and trying harder. By the end of the school year, her report card is filled with “A” and “B” grades. So, Willa and her parents head to AdoptaPet where Willa falls in love with an adorable bloodhound puppy which she names Poppy after the beautiful red Italian poppies that bloom every spring in the field by the Thornton’s house. The vet at AdoptaPet introduces Willa to P. K. Terhune, an expert in raising and training bloodhounds. With Terhune’s help, Willa diligently trains Poppy. The six-month-old pup puts on a special demonstration at the Sonoma County Field Trials and proves that she has some serious search skills. Later, Poppy tracks a developmentally delayed girl who wonders away from a campground. When Mrs. Thornton’s car is car-jacked and Willa and her little brother, Louis Daniel, are kidnapped, Poppy saves them.

I thought this book was wonderful. Being a self-appointed "foodie", I was drawn to this books cover which had pictures of several cloves of garlic. I'm always cooking with garlic so I immediately had to flip through the pages of this book. The book appeared to be a memoir. It also had recipes at the end as well as a list or Resources, and Suggested Reading. I bought the book.

Chester Aaron, author of this book, is a writer and teacher who didn't begin growing garlic until he was in his 60's. His choice of garlic species, oddly enough was highly influenced by his dead parents - his dad who came from Georgia (of the U.S.S.R) and his mom who was from Transylvania (Hungary).

The story of his garlic-growing years is sweet (There's a lot about family, colleagues, neighbors, and friends), educational (Who knew there were so many speciesof garlic, hardly any of which are available in American stores?), and humorous (This guy is funny!). I especially loved the ending and wish the author much success for the terrific book he wrote. I'll be looking for the garlic species he mentioned and will probably save this book so I can use his recipes if I indeed find those species of garlic.

On a very happy note, I'm proud to say that the CSA (community supported agriculture) to which I belong provides me (in season) with hardneck garlic. Hooray!!

Gideon is about a young man living in a Polish Ghetto during the German occupation. He is a lucky and skilled young man who can slip into the outside world. First, he is working for profit, then for the resistance. The novel is written as a letter to children and grandchildren who did not know the truth about the writer's origins. At times this form jars the reader, as the children and grandchildren are sometimes addressed during important dramatic or action scenes. Still, the main character's inner struggles and the events he goes through, such as the month long resistance in the ghetto and the revolt at Treblinka are unique for young reader's Holocaust fiction.… (meer)
