Abbey Library

This is now quite an old book (published in 1977) but still remarkably good. I thought the text was overly flowery and when I checked, it was originally published in Romania and presumably Radu Boureanu is Romanian and the wording suffered slightly in the translation. However, still an interesting text and I really like Hans Holbein the younger's portrait drawings and paintings. I might have a go at copying some of them!
I found it interesting that despite being a fairly significant artist in his own time he still found it hard to make ends meet. Still, it was a time of great religious and political upheaval and religious painting was suddenly very much out of fashion (and dangerous to be involved). I didn't realise how or why he was in Britain painting Henry VIII or Sir Thomas More but found this aspect of the text quite helpful in understanding. At least one painting, referred to in the text does not appear to be included in the prints...but overall, the quality of the prints is very good....especially for 1977. I rate it as three stars.… (meer)
