If there were an orientation kit for new Portlanders, this book would have to be in it. I read it within weeks of moving here, and it helped me understand the place, its history, and culture in a way that would have taken hours of conversation or research.

Political Terrain: Washington, D.C., from Tidewater… door Carl Abbott

This is an interesting and relatively comprehensive history of Washington DC. I've had to spend a lot of time in the District this spring/summer, and wanted to learn more about the place. There is a distinct shortage of overall books -- lots on individual neighborhoods and other specifics, but very few overviews. This one served my purpose, helping me to orient myself in time and place. The impact that the city's political vocation has had on its development is most interesting, and makes it quite different from most other American cities.… (meer)
