Robert Merrihew Adams taught philosophy for thirty-five years at the University of Michigan, UCLA, and Yale. He is now a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at Mansfield College, Oxford, and Visiting Professor of Philosophy in the University of Oxford. This book, the fruit of decades of Leibniz scholarship, is a masterpiece of history of philosophy. Three central aspects of the philosophy of Leibniz are examined, with meticulous attention to the primary texts, and carefully worked out interpretations, some of them novel. The secondary literature on Leibniz up to 1994 is given due attention, and Adams engages with alternative interpretations, and with some of the editorial decisions of editors of Leibniz's works. An excellent and brilliant book for the setting up for a overtly theistic ethical framework. I especially love the way he incorportes theistic concepts like devotion and idoltary into an overarching ethical framework. Systematic and elegant in its linkages of all the different moral realities and enriching of our moral framework. This work is truly one of the more beautiful product of the analytic tradition and exhibit the beauty of philosophic systemacy.

One complain however is his underlying liberal framework which I thinks infects too much of his thought and his attempt to incoporate too much of the "wisdom of the world" in. Thus, four stars for philosophic brilliance.… (meer)
