I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I have been a volunteer in our church for many years, and it amazes me how many of the things that need done there is done by volunteers. This well-written book tells about building a volunteer system in the church. It talks about identifying and using individual spiritual gifts to help the church to thrive. It also shares ways to steer clear of some of the pitfalls, or burnouts of volunteers.

I feel like this would be a good book for any of the church staff.… (meer)

We love it when God answers prayer. He thunders from heaven to answer Elijah, sending fire to ignite wet wood. He provides food and work, heals the sick, reassembles broken marriages, brings wayward children home. We wouldn't bother to as God's help if we didn't want his resounding "Yes!" to our prayers.
When our prayers are good and reasonable, we see no reason why a good and powerful God wouldn't grant what we ask. But even to the greatest saints God sometimes says no. The "company of the denied" includes David, Paul, even Jesus. Is it possible to make sense of unanswered prayer?

This book is essentially a simple set of studies on the Biblical book of Acts, giving a bit of historical context, and some application for today. I downloaded it free for my Kindle, and read a bit each day over several weeks.

Nothing really new or inspiring, but the writing is good, the style easy to read, and there are some interesting sections. In addition, there are some useful reminders about the excitement of the early Church, something which we've rather lost today, and some sections which seemed quite thought-provoking at the time.

Certainly worth reading, if you're interested in an overview of the book of Acts, but nothing special.… (meer)
