The booklet deals with a certain "toy" ("abstract") computing machine. It does not exist physically but calculations on it involve many important features inherent in the computations on practical electronic computers.
It is intended for broad sections of readers, first of all for schoolchildren, who are not expected to have any knowledge of mathematics beyond the primary school curriculum. The first two chapters are comprehensible even for junior schoolchildren.
It is hoped that the present booklet can advance such concepts as algorithm, universal computing machine, programming in the secondary school.… (meer)

This booklet, written by Prof. V. A. Uspensky, contains two lectures. The first lecture (Pascal's Triangle) is easy in understanding for the students of incomplete secondary schools. It discusses an important numerical table called the Pascal's Triangle which is of use in solving a number of problems. Along with obtaining these solutions, the lecture touches upon the meaning carried by the expression "to solve a problem".
The second lecture (Certain Applications of Mechanics to Mathematics) is for the students of the seventh and eighth school forms. It deals with straightforward solutions of various mathematical problems (occasionally rather complex) by using certain laws of mechanics.… (meer)
