My husband and I chose Dark Intercept by Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson as a road trip listen. I thought this thriller with a military tie-in and lack of romance would appeal to my husband. We diligently listened to the end, but our take-away was that the writing was just okay, the plot a bit ludicrous, and the adult language and graphic violence somewhat offensive. This book was a 2022 Christy Award finalist and a Carol Award winner in the Speculative category. It is heavy on spiritual warfare which we had no problem with, but it was difficult for us to buy into the scenario presented. It does have non-stop action if that is what you are looking for, but as I said the violence was jarring, especially at the end, and both the bad guys and good guys use adult language. There is a twist at the end that we saw coming that will probably be addressed in the next book in the series. However, my husband and I will not be joining in on that mission. 😉

(I purchased the audiobook from Audible. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

I thoroughly enjoyed reading SONS OF VALOR by Andrews and Wilson. It's an engaging read about a Seal Team Tier One unit performing Black Ops in countries that may threaten the U.S. The story is plausible, filled with heart-stopping action, and filled with twists and turns. I highly recommend this compelling book to readers and look forward to purchasing the next book in the series.

Military thrillers aren't usually my kind of thriller. But, I was curious about this book and I'm glad that I agreed to read Tier One. My biggest concern was that it would be too much military lingo and that I would have a hard time keeping up with the plot. Sure there were a lot of acronyms, but it never made the story hard to get.

The best thing was that the story felt very much up-to-date, with all the terrorist acts in recent years. It didn't take me a long time to get into the story. I loved how well-developed the characters are in the book. John Dempsey was easy to like and I could really feel his rage and sorrow when the world he knew was destroyed. It was interesting to follow his journey from soldier to spy. Not easy when you have spent most of your life as SEAL.

The storyline was really good. Sure, there were perhaps not many great twists. But, it was enjoyable and engrossing to read and I came to like the characters very much. Especially Jarvis and Smith that Dempsey came to work with after his world imploded.

So, despite my concern that it would be hard to get into the book, or it would be too much "war" did I come to enjoy Tier One very much and I'm looking forward to one day reading the next book in the series.

I want to thank Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley!

Spiritual warfare is real and fought every day, but we rarely think about it (unless we feel ourselves or someone we love being targeted). In Dark Angel, Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson expose some of the heavenly realm to readers.

As Jedediah Johnson returns to Nashville for training and to meet his Shepherd’s team, readers also travel across the world with those people possessed by the dark ones. With the paramilitary element, the authors deliver plenty of action while also deepening the connections we have with Jed, his team, and the watchers.

The one thing I would like to see more of in these books is intercessory prayer for Jed and his team as they face their unseen enemies. It’s inferred a couple of times but never straight out shown.
While I’m reading this series, I can’t help but wonder why there isn’t truly an organization like this in our world that is hurtling toward destroying itself. But I am also more challenged to pray for those people who give their lives to protect our freedom.

Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
