The Kokoda Trail is a 60 mile grueling path through jungle up and down peaks, often muddy and slippery, and worst of all flanked by ghosts, lost artillery, and evidence of some of the fiercest Pacific battles in WWII. The American author hikes the trail along with a bunch of Aussies. Besides a death defying trek, the hike is an homage to the mainly Australian and the American troops who fought here. The author recollects many stories he learns from the guides and fellow hikers, including its reputation of cannibalism. I never knew the extent of Australia’s participation in WWII and I’m glad to learn it. Nice account of travels to Eastern Turkey and some neighboring countries. The story is focused on the flood myth and the search for Noah's ark, but sometimes turns into a regional history and mountain hiking adventure novel. I liked the regional history and cultural exchange parts more than the built up but ultimately uneventful hike up Mt. Ararat.

Travel writer Rick Antonson and his friend, Peter, rent a Mustang convertible and take off from Chicago to drive from Chicago to Los Angeles driving as many miles as possible of old Route 66. This is the dream of every Baby Boomer who watched the "Route 66" TV show in the 1960's,and it's nice to know that except for about 450 miles, they were able to make the whole trip on the old Mother Road, and along the way, just maybe found the best of America too.
