"What Do Jews Believe?" is a thoroughly philosophical and theological book, best read in portions, taking time to digest the concepts covered. This is most notable in the first chapter, "God." What is the Jewish concept of God. The main thing I learned from the book is that Judaism is a much larger umbrella than I had originally thought. There were points at which I felt somewhat lost in the ideas Ariel was covering. This is probably due more to my own lack of intellectualism than the author's failure to explain a concept, but that is my reason for giving a four star rating rather than a five.

Especially recommended for non-Jews who are considering conversion, but this book would also be very helpful for Jews who have been inactive in their religion and want to get more in touch, or the non-Jew who is just interested and curious about Judaism.

Very good book. Very intellectual and moving all at the same time. Great historical material, great breadth of coverage. A definite re-read in my library.

I read this for a Judaism class--its a pretty good introduction and overview of the basic Jewish holidays and observances--their history and how various sects interpret them. Ariel has explored other religious traditions--now he comes home.
